“Intelligence is the capacity to do something useful in the society in which we live. Intelligence is the ability to respond successfully to new situations and the capacity to learn from one’s past experiences.” - Dr. Howard Gardner
Howard Gardner was born on July 11, 1943. During his childhood he was a very academic child who found pleasure in reading and the piano. He studied at Harvard University, a place where he would later teach in 1986. Originally he studied history but once there quickly found his passion in cognitive developmental psychology.
Gardner’s field of study was inspired by Jean Piaget’s study of developmental psychology. His early career had him working with “normal and gifted children, as well as brain-damaged adults” (About Education, 2015). It was after this work that he published his book Frames of Mind in 1983. This was the first time he wrote about his theory of multiple intelligences. Gardner is the author of twenty-eight books translated into thirty-two languages, and several hundred articles. He is universally known as the “father of Multiple Intelligences” (OASIS, 2014)
